1 minute readThe Achilles’ Heel of Solid-State Technology
Solid-state drives may have a more finite future than previously expected.
Research organized by Laura Grupp tested 45 flash chips from six different vendors to evaluate the future performance possibilities of flash-based, solid-state technology.
Her research concludes that as NAND flash densities increase, data errors and read/write latency also increase.
Therefore, efforts to increase capacity of SSDs will bring the drives closer to the performance level of hard disk drives (HDDs).
Although SSDs will still provide greater IOPS than traditional hard drives, Grupp believes that as the NAND flash technology continues to evolve, end users may face performance trade-offs.
