4 minute read5 Secrets to Saving More Money In Your SAN Storage Environment
Here are five secrets to save you anywhere from 30 to 70 percent when it comes to your storage budget.
Secret #1: There’s a service we perform called disk swap. If you’ve got a storage array and you need additional capacity one thing you might be able to do is re-purpose that array, swap out some of those drives for larger size drives.
What we will do is we will buy the drives from you, let’s say they’re 300 GB drives and we’ll replace them with 600 GB drives, or 900 GB drives. Swap out those drives, you’ll save a ton of money. You’ll save anywhere from 30 to 60 percent by doing something like that.
Secret #2: Buy used hardware. Now used hardware doesn’t mean it’s four years old. Reliant trades in some of the latest technology when it comes to storage. You can get VNX equipment, Data Domain equipment, Data Filer System and upgrades, as well as IBM XIV, V7000s, and the latest SAN switching equipment from Cisco and Brocade.
We’ve got a ton of different options, from the latest technology down to three years old. If you’ve got an environment where you want to save a lot of money, used equipment can save you anywhere from 30 to 70 percent easily, and it’s supported.
Secret #3: Sometimes your storage budget is eaten up with maintenance. You actually can get maintenance on your storage arrays from a company like Reliant. We maintain over a thousand storage arrays and can help you maintain systems from anywhere next-business-day parts replacement to 24X7X4 SLAs, where we come on-site and fix your system.
If you’ve got a lot of your budget getting consumed with IT maintenance contract costs, we definitely can help you there.
Secret #4: If you have older equipment and you want to trade it in, there might be a lot of value remaining in that equipment. It depends on what kind of equipment it is, and of course, equipment that is newer, two years to one year old is definitely going to be more valuable. There might be value in your older equipment as well. You need to reach out to us and let us know what you have and you might be able to cut a lot of your budget dollars out by reclaiming some of those dollars as well.
Secret #5: Split the project in two. Let’s say you’ve got a storage project, and you’ve got three hundred thousand dollars. You’ve just met with your manufacturer sales rep for a system, and the system costs eight hundred thousand dollars. Chances are, I’ll use the 80-20 rule, 20 percent of that workload really needs new technology. Let’s say it’s your VDM project and it needs the latest and greatest SSD drives or flash technology to power that application.
The rest of that workload, the 80 percent, doesn’t need that type of performance. I suggest you look at splitting the project in two, buying one system, possibly new for your most critical performance intensive work loads. The 80 percent, take a look at used hardware to save some money.
I hope these secrets can help you cut some money out of your storage budget and give you some ideas to grow and scale and give your customers, as well as yourself, the performance capacity you need to run your environment.
