4 minute read3 Common Misconceptions About Third-Party Support
When purchasing maintenance and support for your IT infrastructure, there are many options that differ based on your needs. Depending on industry and size of the company, support services can consume up to two-thirds of any given IT budget.
With that in mind, organizations want the most cost-effective support solution, without sacrificing quality of service. Third-Party Support has the ability to provide exceptional support without breaking the bank.
But it is easy to feel apprehensive about leaving the OEM with all the misconceptions about third-party support swirling around. We’re here to debunk the most common myths surrounding third-party maintenance.
Misconception #1: “Third-party maintenance providers don’t have the same level of expertise as the Original Equipment Manufacturer.”
Many third-party support vendors can actually offer OEM-level support. When thinking about moving to an independent support provider you should make sure that they have OEM-level certifications and training across various manufacturers.
This cross-training allows you to implement a one-stop-shop support solution. Third-party maintenance vendors can also provide flexible SLAs to give you the level of support you need for all your equipment. Only need Level 1 support for some of your IT hardware? No problem.
Not only do independent support vendors possess the same type of certifications and training as the OEM, we can also deliver coterminous support contracts that allow you the type of flexibility your organization needs.
Misconception #2: “Third-party maintenance vendors don’t have access to the necessary OS and firmware updates I need.”
This is a very common concern that clients have when thinking about leaving OEM maintenance and support. The OEM will list this as one of the main reasons you should refresh your hardware. The truth of the matter is, once your hardware has gone EOL, critical OS or firmware patches are extremely rare.
At this point, the OEM wants you to upgrade your infrastructure altogether. When it comes to extending the life of your EOL hardware, third-party support is the more cost-effective solution. Don’t feel pressured to upgrade because of the risk of not having access to OS and firmware patches.
Misconception #3: “I won’t be able to find the necessary parts to maintain my legacy hardware.”
The term “End-of-Life” has a very different meaning for third-party maintenance vendors. While the OEM usually suggests upgrading to the latest and greatest system, independent vendors still have the ability to support your legacy equipment.
When a system has been declared EOL, it doesn’t mean that the replacement parts for the equipment no longer exist. In fact, third-party support vendors have access to disk array enclosures, drives, and disk shelves years after the EOL date.
Extending the life of your legacy hardware can also save you money. While OEM support costs tend to spike after the EOL date, third-party maintenance offers savings of 30-70% off OEM prices. This is because once hardware is declared “End-of-Life” the demand for the product drastically drops.
