BREAKING NEWS: Park Place Technologies Acquires Reliant Technology Learn More

6 minute readNew Gartner Report Explains Benefits of Third-Party Maintenance

According to a report recently published by Gartner, third party maintenance providers can provide the best solutions when it comes to combining cost savings with optimum results. This report also marks the key points allowing companies using services from third-party maintenance providers to save enough money and resources to spend on other related activities within the company.

The risk of moving from OEM support to a full TPM or hybrid maintenance solution has all but disappeared. Here are the top five benefits of considering third-party maintenance providers and hybrid support strategies for your data center:

Why Choose Third Party Maintenance?

1. Huge Cost Savings

A good TPM contract will save you more than 50% on support costs compared to support from the OEM. You can achieve these savings by being intentional with which hardware items you place on third-party maintenance. A hybrid solution of TPM and OEM support can sometimes be the best solution for your entire data center. The Gartner report states:

“Hardware maintenance is increasingly being considered as a ‘nonstrategic IT’ spending and procurement, with the result being that IT professionals are seeking low-cost alternatives to expensive equipment manufacturer contracts and pricing.”

Because maintenance is increasingly becoming more “nonstrategic”, fewer people are looking at it as a strategic way to save money. Finding that 50% savings in such an unexpected place will allow you to be the one who frees up other areas of the business for needed growth. A huge win for everyone.

2. Customizable Support Solutions

The Gartner report states that:
“Some enterprises consider the flexibility and customized support from third-party maintenance providers as an advantage.”

When you do business with the OEM, you’re just a number on a spreadsheet, rarely getting the personal attention your data center may need, especially in case of an outage or during unexpected downtime. TPM providers respond to you faster, solving your issues quicker and getting you back on the track to productivity.

Third-party maintenance providers allow you to customize a solution that works for your exact needs across multiple manufacturers, as opposed to a rigid, out-of-the-box, one brand only contract from the OEM. a model that is customized according to your needs.

TPM providers also allow coterminous contracts that spread across multiple data centers, giving you one contract with one specific end date, much easier to track.

3. Extending-the-Life, Avoiding Infrastructure Upgrades

According to Gartner, “Customers will often switch to TPMs when the original warranty runs out, rather than renewing the OEM support contract, due to significant increases in equipment manufacturer post-warranty pricing.”

Doing this allows you to keep your assets in place longer than the equipment manufacturer cycle says you should. By using TPM, you get to keep your current assets in place as long as you want after their end-of-service-life (EOSL) and end-of-life (EOL) dates set by the OEM. This saves you money by not having to spend on a hardware upgrade because the OEM will no longer support what you have in your data center. The Gartner report puts it this way:

“When your equipment reaches its EOS or EOL, using equipment manufacturer support for it will cost you more than the value of the hardware it is supporting. Therefore, switching to a TPM solution allows you to maintain your current technology infrastructure at a more suitable price for your budget. This allows you to upgrade your technology investments at a pace that suits your business needs – instead of allowing the equipment manufacturer to dictate your strategy.”

4. Mission-Critical Solution Customization

If you are just beginning to explore TPM options, it may be best to leave mission-critical items on OEM support and employ a TPM solution for hardware that is either currently non-essential to the core of your data center or approaching an EOL/EOSL date.

Gartner found that “Customers will continue to leverage equipment manufacturer maintenance and TPM maintenance together in a hybrid solution.” Eventually, you may be able to completely move to TPM and fully take advantage of the huge savings it has to offer. But at first, you should look deep into your infrastructure and decide what is best for your unique needs.

5. Institute a Spares Program

There are two main ways to do this. The first is to identify a reliable used hardware vendor that can quickly get you spare parts for a variety of data center equipment. The other and more economically viable option is to use a TPM provider that also provides a spares kit for the hardware items that are covered by that provider.

The latter option saves you time by letting you quickly swap out a failed component in a larger piece of hardware without having to call in a support ticket and waiting several hours or a full day for an engineer to show up and solve what could be a very simple issue.
