Welcome to the final part of our 5 part series about the WORST things you can do with a VNX5300 storage array. If you missed the first 4 parts of this series, then read up here: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, & Part 4.
These VNX5300 mistakes come to you courtesy of one of Reliant’s EMC VNX storage engineering experts. He’s a pretty smart guy and wanted all of you to know why these mistakes may occur and how to best avoid them in the first place. So, what does our EMC engineering expert say is one of the biggest mistakes made with a VNX5300 storage system?
VNX5300 Mistake #5:
Not checking performance benchmarks on a regular schedule.
Your VNX5300’s “CHECK ENGINE” light
Here’s the reality – you’re busy. You wear a lot of different hats and have a lot of things on your plate. We know that things can get pushed to the backburner. It’s normal – you can’t be everything to everyone. One of the things that can tend to get pushed aside is keeping up with your performance benchmarks regularly.
You may be thinking, ‘There’s no way I’d forget to do that!” Well, think about this – most of us know the performance upkeep we should be doing for our cars: we should get our oil changed regularly, should check our tire pressure, keep a good spare tire, and the list goes on. How many of us are guilty of waiting until that “Check Engine” light comes on to go get that oil change or wish we had gotten a spare tire when we’re stuck on the side of the road waiting for the tow truck? (I admit it, I’m guilty too…) It’d be a lot better and easier in the long run for all of us if we just did our best to keep up with everything. But it’s not always that easy.
So, how often should performance benchmarks be checked?
The short answer – it depends. It depends is always a horrible answer because it doesn’t really tell us anything. What does it depend on?
Well, it will depend a lot on the type of environment you have. Is it growing? Shrinking? Are you adding new applications? These are the types of things that will affect the frequency for how often you should check the performance benchmarks on your VNX5300 storage array.
Give me an answer… how frequently should I check my performance benchmarks?
Even though we said that the frequency depends on multiple factors within your environment, a good rule-of-thumb for how often to check those performance benchmarks is on a quarterly basis. Now, if you’re a huge organization, those benchmarks will probably need to be checked far more frequently than just on a quarterly basis. If you’re a small company, every quarter is probably fine. But, again, it will depend on the other factors we mentioned previously. It’s just important that you set a schedule to check these benchmarks so storage admins can fully understand the growth and utilization of their environment and make plans accordingly.
We’ve reached the end of our journey – for now.
