NetApp and EMC are unified storage leaders – Which should you choose?

Unified storage is a mainstream technology used by storage vendors. Computer Weekly outlines some of the current characteristics that are becoming part of block storage array devices.

The only major vendor to offer a fully unified platform is NetApp. Its FAS8000 series of devices doesn’t require additional hardware to provide for file or block. Most other vendors haven’t chosen this path in storage implementation because they prefer to use separate components.

NetApp and EMC can both support the most daunting storage environments maintaining them well with management software. Both can also support your SAN environment. Get to know them both before making your decision.

Unified Storage options from NetApp

Whenever there’s a single piece of hardware from which any protocol can be software-enabled, costs can be minimized and flexibility maximized. Perhaps that’s why so many seeking better scalability and ease of management have come to favor NetApp. NetApp FAS series has a unified platform of both block and file storage. NetApp

•  Can support unified storage management in multivendor environments. Real-time, end-to-end, unified views make sharing and viewing information easy.
•  Helps you integrate multivendor products and technology so you won’t lose valuable time
•  NetApp OnCommand™ Insight suite provides analytic support throughout your entire storage environment.

Unified Storage options from EMC

In 2011, EMC replaced its CLARiiON and Celerra products with a single product line combining both on one platform, the VNX. The converged block and file protocols were managed by Unisphere software. The VNX series can unify your storage needs for all types of blocks, objects and files. You can utilize the VNX series for data warehousing, and it works with both Hyper-V and VMware. VNX supports SAS, NL-SAS, and flash drives.

The VNXe for small businesses combines block and file support into one unit on the VNXe3300. VNXe provides compression and thin provisioning technologies. It’s not only scalable from six to 150 disk drives, it’s also capable of up to 450 TB. It frees small businesses from the need to constantly monitor their commercial applications.
