3 minute readEMC Celerra NS-480 Upgrade Options

By Kyle Christopher

The EMC Celerra is a NAS device produced by EMC. The EMC Celerra family is comparable to NetApp FAS products in that they offer similar features and protocol support as well as iSCSI block-level storage. However, EMC Celerra also provides Fibre Channel block-level storage.

The EMC Celerra NS-480 array is an advanced unified storage system that allows customers to scale, providing failover capabilities and fully automated storage tiering to multi-protocol storage environments.

The NS-480 offered the following benefits, which can now be satisified by considering upgrade options, such as the EMC CX4.

1. Scalability

The NS-480 array scales up to the 480 drives, as its name implies. It also integrates seamlessly with the CLARiiON CX4 networked storage series from EMC. A lot of data storage managers who just need more capacity without breaking the bank will find the NS-480 to be more than capable to meet performance and capacity needs.

2. Ease-of-Use

For storage managers who do not have a lot of time on their hands, the NS-480 has been a welcome addition to the storage infrastructure. This device can go from initialization to production in minutes. High availability and fully automated storage tiering even make management of the device very easy. Automated tiering has been found to be critical to efficient storage; for more on this topic, check out this article from searchstorage.com. Common administrative tasks can also be simplified with functionality like the Celerra Manager, file system deduplication, virtual provisioning, automated volume management, and Celerra SnapSure.

3. Single and Dual Blade Configurations

The NS-480 supports both single and dual X-blade configurations. For those wishing to upgrade to a dual-blade configuration, the upgrade can be performed non-disruptively for up to four X-blade configurations.

Here are the features of each X-blade:

  • Dual 2.8 GHz LV Processors
  • 4 GB Double Data Rate RAM (266 MHz) on an 800 MHz FSB
  • Two 4 Gb/s Fibre Channel ports for storage connectivity
  • Up to two 4 Gb/s Fibre Channel ports for tape connectivity
  • Four 10/100/1000 BaseT ports or two 10 Gigabit Ethernet Optical ports and two 10/100/1000 BaseT ports
  • One 10/100/1000 Management Port
  • Instance of DART File Server software
