3 minute readOptimizing Your IT Team

Data centers are filled with unpredictable equipment by their very nature. To say that it’s difficult to keep servers and other data center components operating at peak efficiency is something of an understatement. You may not be able to control every aspect of your data, however, something you can control is the way in which your IT team operates. In order to combat the world of the unpredictable in your data center, your organization should strive to take steps to optimize the functionality of your IT team at all costs. Doing so will not only help keep your data center running at peak efficiency, but it will also help save your organization a huge amount of money by decreasing or eliminating factors such as employee turnover as much as possible.

The Group Dynamic

One of the most important ways to optimize your IT team has to make sure that you’re doing everything you can to contribute to the group dynamic. This means hiring IT staffers that aren’t just talented, but also those who work well in a group and learn and adapt as quickly as possible. Having goals shared and communicated effectively among your team will help create the best possible results so that if a staffer believes in a particular project’s strategy – it can be communicated and explained to other members of the team.

Another key factor to consider when optimizing your IT team has to do with looking at exactly where your organization is spending money. This will fall into two major categories: training and communication.

•  Training: Investing money into training is important not just in regards to what is being trained, but also for whom the training is being done. For example, money in training may be best invested in lower-level IT employees rather than higher-level IT staffers who are already efficient and independent. By spending time and money on training people such as junior administrators, you can provide them with the knowledge they need to do their jobs for your organization even better in the future.

•  Communication: Another area in which you should consider investing is systems that allow for more fluid communication to connect your IT team to your end-users. This could mean reorganizing the layout of your building to put IT employees closer to end-users for the benefit of communication if that would help to increase the flow of communication within your organization.

Outsource Wisely

Another key factor to consider involves not just the decision to outsource certain IT functions, but outsourcing strategically. By outsourcing your help desk, for example, you can give your core IT team more hours in the day to work on existing projects and plan new ones that will elevate your business well into the future by way of innovation.
