Reid:  Michael and I are in a deep philosophical conversation right now, talking about disk drive sizes. We’re talking about, why would you just not always add 600 gig drives, if they have the same IOPS as a 300 gig drive?

Michael: Right.

Reid: But they don’t, I guess.

Michael: Right.

Reid: Does every drive have about 150 IOPS or so?

Michael: Every SAS drive will have about 180. Every fiber channel about 150. When we get to Flash SAS, NL SAS, they change a little bit. 80, 90, things like that.

Reid: If they’re in that 150 range, would a 600 gig drive have 130 and a 300 gig would have 180?

Michael: No. Don’t confuse the capacity-

Reid: With the speed?

Michael: With the speed, right.

Reid: Why would you ever install anything but a 600 gig drive?

Michael: Maybe there’s a good price on them. That could be. Maybe there’s a good opportunity to add those. Maybe you’re repurposing. There’s many options to get different drive sizes.

Reid: I know on the used market there are different prices of drives. The higher capacity drives are more expensive, lower capacity drives are less expensive, so that’s a case in point. I just wonder if budget was unlimited if you’d always install one size drive, [inaudible 00:01:39].

Michael: I think so. I think you’re going to go for the mix of performance and capacity. I think if it’s an unlimited budget, with Flash being what it is today, it’s not new. It’s tested. It’s fully baked, so you’re going to have, in a perfect world, with an unlimited budget, you’re going to have a multi-tiered pool that’s going to have Flash SAS and NL SAS. That’s going to be the perfect world.

Reid: Just so everyone knows, NL SAS is the replacement for SATA drives. People say, “I want SATA drives.” Now it’s NL SAS.

Michael: Right. NL SAS.

Reid: What’s NL SAS? Near-Line SAS?

Michael: Near Line SAS is the new SATA.

Reid: The new SATA.

Michael: Yeah.

Reid: NL SAS is the new SATA.
