3 minute readFinding the New Potential of Old Servers

The “next big thing” always seems to be right around the corner. While this means exciting things for technology in general, it also means severely upsetting things for technology as an investment. Consider smartphones, for example. We’ve reached a point where devices that cost hundreds of dollars are advancing rapidly on a yearly basis. You have at most just a few short months to enjoy your wonderful new device before it suddenly becomes obsolete. While this can be frustrating for personal users, it is a costly situation for businesses – particular when it comes to expensive investments like server hardware.

The Importance of Servers

One of the most important technology-based decisions that a business can make has to do with the types of hardware that it chooses to depend on daily. Picking out the right sever will have a dramatic effect on not just the health of a business, but also its overall level of success. It’s important to note, however, that just because the “next big thing” in regards to servers is suddenly knocking out the door doesn’t mean that you have to throw out all of your old equipment and start again.

New Uses for Old Servers

One of the best ways to increase your return on investment for server hardware is to find a new way to integrate old hardware into your business. One of the best ways to do this is to upgrade the connectivity of your old hardware to the latest Generation 5 Fibre Channel. When connected to Generation 5 switches, old hardware will suddenly start to play a hugely important role in your organization once again. They’ll be able to support more virtual workloads and a higher level of database users, which will also allow you to achieve a higher overall ROI at the same time – even if you still plan on upgrading.

When to Upgrade

Deciding when to upgrade old servers to the newest models is a question that will vary depending on the situation. If your old hardware is suffering from performance issues that just don’t seem to have a proper fix, for example, it is likely time to consider an upgrade. It may also be time to upgrade if you’ve held onto your old equipment for too long. Most experts recommend refreshing your hardware every three to four years – though that time can be extended by finding the new potential of old servers.
