When EMC announced VNX2, it raised a lot of questions among end-users who may have prior generation EMC models such as EMC CLARiiON CX4 or CX3 devices, questions like:
- “How much longer will EMC support my devices?”
- “When do I need to upgrade?”
- “What uses are there for my current hardware?”
I will answer these questions and more as well as give you food for thought on a few alternative solutions that could save you money and put that older hardware to work for you.
1. Why is the introduction of new hardware good for customers?
The introduction of new hardware is good for customers on several levels. For large enterprises with big budgets, the immediate benefits are obvious: You get the latest and greatest hardware and software and the newest technology.
On the other hand, and as we have discussed previously, the introduction of new hardware is also great news for medium-sized enterprises that have budget constraints. Why? Because it means that previous generations are now offered at a much lower cost. You may not be able to afford the latest and greatest, but you will be able to find “later and greater” gear at a fraction of the cost you might have paid, say, two years ago. So while you might not have the very latest that EMC has to offer, you’ll now be able to afford an upgrade to an earlier generation at significant savings.
2. I just upgraded to a VNX model and then VNX2 came out. Did I waste my money?
Absolutely not! VNX storage arrays, new and old, are some of the best systems on the midrange market today. They have tremendous value. You still get superior capacity and performance and will have it for several years.
3. How much longer will my devices be supported?
Full disclosure: the manufacturers limit the time they support their devices in order to push customers into purchasing newer hardware. The good news is that you will often find third-party maintenance and support providers are more equipped to handle a broad array of storage environments. Instead of being trained on one manufacturer, third-party maintenance providers often have a breadth of experience necessary to support kit environments, which many end-users have nowadays.

4. When must I upgrade?
When you need to upgrade will depend on your performance and capacity requirements. Most storage professionals need to upgrade in some form or fashion based on the sheer rate at which data growth is happening. And as data continues to grow, a lot of storage admins simply aren’t yet prepared. You’ll most likely need to upgrade to prepare for this growth. That’s where Reliant can help.
