4 minute readEMC CX4 Pricing Tips (And Free Storage Planning Checklist!)

We get questions from IT pros all the time, asking for ways to save on CX4 or other EMC hardware. “Saving” applies not only to money but also to time, long-term maintenance and support and other areas where you may need efficiency. You also need to think long term about your capacity and performance needs. While you may be saving money on a particular device, if you haven’t thought through your decision, you may end up going back for more storage, essentially doubling your initial prices.

Being armed with the information you need will help you avoid such a situation and invest in a long-term ROI solution for your IT department or your business.

Here are some tips.

1. Plan

If you’re considering a storage investment, you need to plan for your capacity, availability and performance (CAP) needs for 3 – 5 years from now. We were trying to think of a tool that could help, so we put together this free storage planning checklist which will help you know what you need. While it’s far from comprehensive, the checklist will at least get you thinking in the right direction when it comes to planning for your future as well as present storage needs. In short, you need room to grow!

2. Sell

Selling your older storage hardware for cash can save you a great deal of cash overhead on a new purchase. I’ve worked with a few storage pros that have basically been able to walk away from a new storage project having covered the majority of their cost by selling used storage gear. And if you’re worried about how you’re going to store data and back up your data during a transition….

3. Rent

Renting storage hardware is a GREAT alternative to buying new hardware. It gives you a place to swing your data while you’re putting something new in place. Another consideration for rentals is the following: Let’s say you’re not sure what exactly you’ll need. Leasing or renting can give you a “trial run” on some new gear. This gives you the chance to prove the value of new hardware and possibly convince your procurement folks that new storage is worth the money.

4. Ask Why

It is important to ask yourself and your department why you might consider EMC CX4 for your storage needs. This may or may not work for you. It’s not the latest and greatest hardware, so using it for your production environment may not be ideal. However, if you’re considering a disaster recovery (DR) solution like most IT pros nowadays, the CX4 would absolutely be a great solution, especially when you consider your other option; i.e. no DR at all.

5. Consider Independent Resellers

Your current VAR will very likely be able to find you the latest and greatest hardware. And EMCs marketing has been able to sell the masses on the idea that VNX gives you superior functionality to the CX4. You know we call the VNX around here? CX5. For example, if you need a car to get you to work and back, you could buy a new Lexus or you could buy an incredible 2014 Honda Accord. Both will get you what you need. But if your interest is in cost-savings, independent resellers can at least get you an Accord, if not a Lexus, at much lower prices. CX4 offers all the iSCSI and Fibre Channel connectivity you need as well as NAS and IP functionalities. So let me ask you a question, “Why do you need the latest and greatest?” It may help you, but there may be other options as well. Have you considered all the options and whether you could save money and time by repurposing hardware or purchasing used.
