Reliant Technology is attending EMC World 2014 this week. One of our goals is to learn; to learn about the future of storage, to learn about the problems storage admins and IT Directors are facing in their environments, as well as hear about proposed solutions and contribute to the conversation. It’s looking to be a good week.
Sometimes in the tech world, watching the parade of tech memes is like watching a column of ants marching by. They come, they go, and they never end.
They march in step, one drone to another, keeping the lines straight, with very little variation.
Sometimes one gets brave and breaks the line.
What Defines Success?
In this definition, a Corporation is successful if it markets its ideas and makes a profit in the meantime. As it markets its ideas, it increases it expertise. And then uses its expertise to expand the company name until the company becomes the product.
The company expands the cottage industry into a neighborhood into a village and then into a city overflowing with their knowledge, ideas, and inventions. Their product.
Software works that way. Software translates ideas into a usable form. Whether we are discussing applications, business processes or analytical models, a company’s investment in software is about their desire to increase productivity, to share their ideas in a monetary language. Software is the impetus to sharing the idea.
The New Product Cycle for Business
The product cycle is called womb to tomb. Developing a product from inception to the last march of the pennies into the grave. In a software driven world there is a different product cycle. It goes like this:
- Unique understanding is discovered, such as a business process.
- The unique insight is codified as software.
- The software is operational as soon as possible to maximize the benefit.
The new Product Cycle is also about Hardware
The new product is investing in ideas that enhance current infrastructures and maximize their performance, while also considering where new products may benefit your environment. In other words, use new hardware only where it makes sense and invest in used hardware when it can save you time and money, while giving you comparable performance to the latest and greatest.
New Product Cycle – Learn, code, monetize
Our current IT environments aren’t created along these lines. Our foundation is static and stuck.
IT needs to change the focus.
- Change the business mode to one driven by knowledge, expertise, and intellectual property. In this new world, a hybrid of new and used hardware will allow you to customize your environment to fit your needs. Meanwhile, you can invest in the software that will enhance these products to their maximum benefit.
This shift creates a new business model, enabled by the new IT model. This will require a very different investment strategy and corporate budget. This will mean change, that six-letter word that triggers panic and fear to those who like stagnation, they just see it in the guise of security.
he race for transformation of the IT world has begun and there a just a few that are taking baby steps out the gate. As we watch, we shall see who the real front-runners are.
