Rather, they choose to have one or maximum two IT administrators manage multiple silos of infrastructure. Whether this is application systems, virtualized environments, storage and data protection, or even simply networking resources, it can be a lot for one or two people to manage. This leads to the trouble of them not being able to focus on business revenue, but rather various other tasks.

Often in an organization you may have only one or two IT administrators that manage multiple areas of infrastructure. Typically this role requires being responsible for application systems, networking resources and virtualized environments, as well as administering storage and data protection. Administrators are incredibly busy and do not have the time to focus on how IT can actually enhance the business in terms of profitability.

Increasing Expenditures from Data Growth 

IT organizations strive to save on capital expenditures and ongoing management, which can be partially achieved by managing storage costs. Data is doubling almost every two years. Most data growth is coming from unstructured data or data external to databases.

Such data is found in user files, PDFs, audio and video files, JPEGs and machine sensor data. Soaring data growth is escalating the demand for additional primary storage capacity and backup storage. These are more than likely to compel increased storage expenditures year after year.

Labor invested in planning, integrating and updating storage environments can help absorb appreciable amounts of IT support time. Data recovery and archival functions must also be supported. Storage inefficiency may have been tolerable in the past, but is fast becoming more difficult to justify. Storage utilization in data centers is often under 40 percent, an inefficiency arising from poor predictions of capacity utilization over 1 to 3 year periods.

Zero configuration storage is an effective way to reduce costs while making it simpler to add new storage resources. Solutions based on scale-out architecture allowing for discrete storage nodes to be added to a cluster “just-in-time” add significant provisioning efficiencies.

Containing Commodity Costs

Commodity disk drives are often highly dense, and extremely expensive. You can reduce costs by leveraging these, as well as mix and match drive types and densities. This way you can keep your cost per GB used much lower. Store their data in a smaller sized rack. This will in turn require less spindles, as well as less power and cooling. 

Eventually, having individual disk drives replaced, or all your drives in a storage node replaced, can be expensive. This is why higher density drives exist. Having flexibility to use drives from any manufacturer, means that you can avoid purchasing storage from one manufacturer. It will also provide a reason for OEMs to lower their price per TB over time.

Object Based Storage Architecture

Because we are moving into a new reality of storage architecture that can aid in storage management overload due to dense disk drive architectures, we are able to continue to provide a high level of availability at the same time.

This allows your drive to recover quicker because your data data availability remains extremely high. It also allows you to deliver in the most cost efficient method, while maintaining the highest level of availability.

If you are looking to maintain high availability, then you will also need to consistently monitor your storage environment. If you do not do this, then the components are likely to fail. By regularly gathering metrics on the health of each individual drive, you will be able to identify the issues when they fail, and even before they fail.
