What is the HPE 3PAR Storage System?

The HPE 3PAR storage system is both hybrid and an all-flash option storage architecture that provides federated tier-1 data services, multi-tenancy security, hardware-accelerated data deduplication, and compression.

HPE 3PAR storage systems are renowned for their ability to handle dynamic and unpredictable workloads, as a result of their dedicated storage processor (ASIC), which helps in linking systems together into logical resource pools which, in turn, provides a means for non-disruptive and completely transparent movement of data between HPE 3PAR systems.

Conveniently Handle Dynamic Workloads

This is the major feature of the HPE 3PAR storage system. This is made possible as a result of ASIC, which helps to handle the workload that would originally be carried out by the system’s CPU. In a situation where there is an unplanned workload for the system to handle, the CPU takes control of the workload, since it still has headroom.

Design Trade-off

The HPE 3PAR system is designed to efficiently cater to both the storage and performance needs of a network. The system is capable of storing up to 20PB of data and having a throughput of 20GB/s and a sub 1ms latency.

Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC)

ASIC is the heart of the HPE 3PAR storage system. It is responsible for the input/output of data and it helps speed up the functions that, with other storage arrays, have to be handled by a processor.

3PAR ASIC helps to handle thousands of dynamic and unpredictable workloads. This is due to the ASIC handling the workloads and, as a result, the CPUs have headroom to handle unpredictable workloads. ASIC distributes traffic across all controller caches and drives in the system so all applications can have access to all system resources.

ASIC significantly elevates the value of thin provisioning by overcoming the capacity limitation of an individual storage system.

Automated Provisioning

HPE 3PAR storage system can automatically assign storage resources to host based on capability, availability, and performance requirements of the application running on the hosts.

Federated Tier 1 Storage

This storage architecture tiers important data across individual storage entities of the whole storage network.

Dynamic Multi-Tenancy

HPE 3PAR storage systems offer dynamic multitenancy by offering clients shared access to resources in the system. This gives room for scalability, low entry cost, and an avenue for the cloud to maintain the shared resources of computation, storage, and network.

Data Deduplication

HPE 3PAR offers deduplication and compression features by reducing the amount of storage (up to 50%) required to save data. This is done inline, by checking if the data to be stored is unique.

HPE 3PAR software helps the system to stay thin by constantly reclaiming space using 16K granularity which helps to return almost 100% of unused capacity to the system.

Logical Unit Number

This unique identifier is used in representing individual or a collection of physical or virtual storage arrays that execute input or output commands with a host, as in HPE 3PAR systems.

Flash Optimized Data Protection

With Recovery manager central, application-consistent snapshots and backups are created, and data recovery is made easy with preferred native interfaces such as VMware, Microsoft, SQL, and more. With RMC, backups are 23x faster and 15x for data restoration.

Quality of Service

HPE used QoS to prioritize the performance of important applications on a network by controlling data traffic, reducing latency, and offering dedicated bandwidth to those important applications.

Non-Volatile Memory express (NVMe)

NVMe is used in HPE 3PAR storage devices to deliver the best throughput and reduce latency in storage devices for all types of workloads, dynamic or static.

Recovery Central Manager

HPE Recovery Central Manager (RMC) eliminates the backup window and enables rapid online recovery with hundreds of fast, non-disruptive, application-consistent snapshots. This reduces the backup impact on your applications, which supports the performance of your HPE Storage deployment.

Data Replication

HPE 3PAR storage system allows room for local and remote data replication by sharing data across local and remote redundant disk backup, ensuring consistencies.

Snapshots

Snapshots are virtual copies of the existing volume of data. They help to provide fast and non-disruptive data recovery by preserving the data written to the source virtual volume.

Chunklets

Chunklets are storage units created by the HPE 3PAR storage architecture whenever drives are added to the storage arrays. Chunklets are grouped to build logical disks in the system. These chunklets are not visible to the users.

Peer Motion

HPE 3PAR Peer Motion software provides host and virtual volume migration features on HPE 3PAR Storage systems, and in HPE 3PAR storage federations.

Logical Drives

Logical drives are virtual units of storage that implement RAID and other properties. A key feature of logical drives is that their size is increased automatically when written, from host applications to virtual volumes, as they approach capacity thresholds.
