Are you finding it challenging to understand what these milestones mean and how they affect our storage environment? When Dell EMC, NetApp, HP, IBM, Cisco, Brocade, or any OEM announces that a piece of hardware will reach End of Life (EOL) or End of Service Life (EOSL), it means we’ll need to decide what our next steps for EOL hardware are.  But what exactly is the difference between End of Life (EOL) and End of Service Life (EOSL)? Let’s find out. 


EOL or “End of Life” means the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) has set a date for the end of a product’s useful lifespan and recommends doing a hardware refresh to the newest generation. After the EOL date, OEMs will no longer sell the asset but will still offer extended hardware maintenance. We should schedule EOL dates to trigger an evaluation of alternative support options.


EOSL or “End of Service Life” indicates that all primary and extended support will no longer be offered by the OEM, except under certain instances and at a premium cost. We should consider a third-party maintenance (TPM) vendor to support equipment past its EOSL date.


End users have several options when it comes to extending the life of an EOL storage system. The first involves purchasing extended support from the OEM, which usually comes in six-month increments for up to two years. But just because the OEM still offers support doesn’t mean it’s a necessary expense. 


Implementing third-party support may be the more prudent option because it allows us to receive the same or better support services at a fraction of OEM maintenance prices.
